The Greenland island, an autonomous territory within the Danish Realm, is located between the Arctic and Atlantic oceans, east of the Canadian Arctic Archipelago.

Greenland is a part of Denmark, though a home-rule government attends to domestic affairs. Its people are primarily Inuit.

Greenlanders are gradually politically and culturally associating themselves the continent of Europe despite being somewhat closer to North America.

Greenland is divided into five municipalities; Sermersooq, Kujalleq, Qeqertalik, Qeqqata, and Avannaata.

It has two unincorporated areas: the Northeast Greenland National Park and the Thule Air Base.

Three-quarters of Greenland island is covered by the only permanent ice sheet outside of Antarctica.

As of 2020, 56,081 inhabited the Greenland island making it the least densely populated area in the world.

About a third of the population of Greenland lives in Nuuk, which is the capital and largest city in Greenland island, with the second-largest city in terms of population being Sisimiut, which is about some 320 kilometres (200 mi) north of Nuuk.

The Arctic Umiaq Line ferry acts as a lifeline for western Greenland, connecting the various cities and settlements.
