Construction of the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom began in November 2010, and by January 2014, it was ready for viewing by the public.

The first phase of the Chimelong Ocean Kingdom park cost RMB 10 billion to build.

In 2014, the year the facility opened, a reported 5,504,000 people visited the aquarium. This figure appreciated to 7,486,000 the following year 2015 and then to 8,474,000 the next year in 2016.

With a continuous increase in the number of people visiting the aquarium, 2017 saw a reported 9,788,000 visiting the facility, which increased to 10,830,000 in 2018.
