A zoo is a facility in which animals are housed within enclosures, cared for, displayed to the public, and in some cases breeding for conservation purposes.

The term zoological garden refers to zoology, the study of animals.

While some zoos are relatively small, with just a few species of different animals in them, others are very large and have several animals of different species dwelling in them.

We can readily talk about some famous zoos in the world such as the Columbus Zoo and Aquarium, Moscow Zoo, San Diego Zoo, Toronto Zoo, Bronx Zoo, Beijing Zoo, Berlin Zoological Garden, Henry Doorly Zoo, etc, but which is the largest zoo in the world.

In determining the largest zoo in the world, several factors are taken into consideration. While others look at just the land size a zoo covers, others look at the number of animals and species that could be found in the zoo.

A zoo could be very large by land size but have very few animal species in it, while another could have a smaller land area with a lot of animal species in it.

Whichever way you look at it, animals, which are the inhabitants of these zoos, are very important which means that it doesn’t just have to be about how large the land area is but how many animal species found bee found in the zoo.

Moscow Zoo was established in 1864 by a public society led by three biology professors from the nearby Moscow University; during its first year, the zoo housed 134 domestic animals and 160 wild animals.

The zoo was nationalized in 1919 and has been under government ownership since 1922.

In 1990, the zoo was renovated.

Notable additions included a new main entrance in the shape of a large rock castle and a footbridge that connected the old (1864) and new (1926) properties of the zoo.

Prior to the construction of the footbridge, the zoo operated as two ‘separate zoos’ because the Bolshaya Gruzinskaya Street divides the properties.
